If you could enforce one new rule to professional football...
What would you bring in?

Diving to be punished retrospectively? This could end diving overnight I think.

Ball to hand is NOT handball?

Time-keeping done independent of referees?
They have enough going on. Rugby has it right.

How can we make the game better?

Video replays for important incidents during the game as the officials aren't consistent enough and seem to be getting worse not better.

Blimey trev didn't realise it was that much, thought that 10 minutes off would be enough. I suppose the stopcock would speed that up a bit.
Guess us fans are getting short changed.

generally the ball is in play for only about 60 minutes during a game i think.

No reason they can't play 1 hour each way as footballers are far more fitter now days than they were when then game first started.

They were playing 45 mins each way with no subs 100 years ago.

The game will open up more later in the second half and the fans will get more football for their money.

stop clock is a good idea - not sure why its never been done before.

i'd sort out the offside rule as well.

You're not allowed to wear snoods anymore for risk of strangulation.
If the ball is within playable distance of the player shepherding the ball out of play then it can't be deemed as obstruction.
Obviously, if he's blocking off an opponent 3yards away from the ball then it certainly is, but then every ariel challenge where Carroll stands firm and blocks off his man would be obstruction and people would whine about that.

Time keeping done by the 4th official and with it displayed on the big screen counting down would be the one.
Everyone can see when he's stopped it for injury treatment or other necessary reasons and then restarted.

Red cards for wearing gloves or a snood

How about a yellow card for the goalscorer if they DONT jump into the crowd??!

Re: If you could enforce one new rule to professional football...
SHEPHERDING the ball out at a ridiculously low speed for a goal kick should be an obstruction....like it is anywhere else on the pitch.

Re: If you could enforce one new rule to professional football...
Make the game 40 minutes each way but with an independent timekeeper using a clock that everyone in the ground can see. Every time the ball leaves the field or a stoppage in play the clock stops. Eliminates time wasting on throw in and goal kicks.
Also adds to the drama knowing you only have a couple of minutes left to get a goal etc.

Retrospective action on divers, anything to help refs as is it a bloody difficult job

Any unnecessary crowding/arguing with the referee during the match that is included in the referees match report will result in a retrospective yellow card for the team captain.

I'd like to see every single rule on here introduced, even the ones that contradict each other.

100% agree. Was gonna say independent time keeping. But I reckon a rule banning players using hands on one another in any form would be superb: shoulder to shoulder fine. Touch a shirt etc.- yellow. Let them as can play do so.

What chad said.
I'd also give the 4th official a tv. They do fuck all else, and would clear up 95% of contentious decisions in about 15 seconds.

Not entirely sure what people would do with their lives without crying like scousers about refereeing decisions, but there you go.

Thank fuck none of you lot are involved in the decision making.

THIS.

Also this level of crowding referees to protest is definitely relatively new. I'm not usually one to moan about post-86er football or whatever but it's definitely increased massively.

Sin bin for dissent, including if the captain approaches the referee unless asked to.

Re: If you could enforce one new rule to professional football...
You mouth off and crowd the referee with your cronies you get sent off. Respect their decision and fuck off. Refs are shit at the min but every decision is met with histrionics from players and pathetic little ruckuses ensue. The referee should be feared on the pitch as the one and only decision maker, not getting intimidated by the threat of being bummed by John Terry

When the player waves an imaginary card at the ref telling him to book the perpetrator of a foul etc..gets my goat

Re: If you could enforce one new rule to professional football...
how about...........................
on FA type games, that need a result,

After a full time draw, the Side reduces their squad by any 2 players.
10 mins each way, then another two go if it's still a draw, and so on.

SilverSurfer 1:09 Fri Feb 5
Re: If you could enforce one new rule to professional football...
yellow still stands though.
